What Size Parking Space Do I Need for My Boat, RV, or Trailer?

Measure tongue to tail, add a few feet of clearance, and pick from two sizes. A quick guide to choosing between a 10×25 and 12×50 ft space without paying for room you won't use.

The short answer: if your boat, trailer, or camper measures under about 22 feet from the tip of the tongue to the back of the motor, a 10×25 ft space will fit it. Anything longer, including most RVs, fifth wheels, pontoons, and offshore center consoles, needs a 12×50 ft space.

How to measure correctly

The most common mistake is using the boat's advertised length, which measures only the hull. Storage space is about the whole rig. Measure:

  • Length: from the front of the trailer coupler to the rearmost point, usually the outboard lower unit, swim platform, or RV ladder and spare tire.
  • Width: at the widest point, often the trailer fenders or RV mirrors. Most rigs are 8.5 ft wide or less.
  • Clearance: add 2–3 ft to your length so you can back in without clipping a neighbor or hanging into the drive lane.

When to size up

Even if your rig technically fits a small space, consider the large one if you:

  • Plan to upgrade your boat or camper in the next year.
  • Store a tow vehicle or second trailer alongside it.
  • Have a long tongue extension or a bow-mounted trolling motor that pushes length past 22 ft.
  • Want extra room to walk around the rig for maintenance, washing, or loading.

At only $20/month more, the 12×50 space often pays for itself in convenience. Every E-Z Storage parking space includes 24/7 access, video surveillance, and use of our on-site rinse station, which is handy for flushing salt water off a hull after a weekend in Galveston Bay.

Store gear separately for a cleaner rig

Many customers pair a parking space with an 8×20 ft container ($85/month) for coolers, life jackets, tools, and seasonal gear. It keeps the boat lighter on the trailer and keeps valuables out of sight.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 24 ft boat fit in a 25 ft parking space?

Usually not. A 24 ft hull on a trailer typically measures 28–30 ft including the tongue and motor. Choose a 12×50 ft space for boats with hulls over about 18–20 ft.

What size storage space does a travel trailer need?

Most travel trailers need a 12×50 ft space. E-Z Storage accommodates RVs and trailers up to 35 ft in length.

Do I need to measure the boat or the trailer for storage?

Measure the whole rig: from the front of the trailer coupler to the rearmost point of the boat or motor. The hull length alone underestimates the space you need.
