What Size Parking Space Do I Need for My Boat, RV, or Trailer?

Measure tongue to tail, add a few feet of clearance, and pick from two sizes. A quick guide to choosing between a 10×25 and 12×50 ft space without paying for room you won't use.

The short answer: if your boat, trailer, or camper measures under about 22 feet from the tip of the tongue to the back of the motor, a 10×25 ft space will fit it. Anything longer, including most RVs, fifth wheels, pontoons, and offshore center consoles, needs a 12×50 ft space.

How to measure correctly

The most common mistake is using the boat's advertised length, which measures only the hull. Storage space is about the whole rig. Measure:

  • Length: from the front of the trailer coupler to the rearmost point, usually the outboard lower unit, swim platform, or RV ladder and spare tire.
  • Width: at the widest point, often the trailer fenders or RV mirrors. Most rigs are 8.5 ft wide or less.
  • Clearance: add 2–3 ft to your length so you can back in without clipping a neighbor or hanging into the drive lane.

Size comparison at a glance

Small (10×25 ft)$55/monthJet skis, kayak trailers, bass boats, jon boats, 16–20 ft bay boats, utility and landscape trailers, compact cars
Large (12×50 ft)$75/monthClass A/B/C motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, pontoon boats, 22–35 ft center consoles, enclosed car haulers

When to size up

Even if your rig technically fits a small space, consider the large one if you:

  • Plan to upgrade your boat or camper in the next year.
  • Store a tow vehicle or second trailer alongside it.
  • Have a long tongue extension or a bow-mounted trolling motor that pushes length past 22 ft.
  • Want extra room to walk around the rig for maintenance, washing, or loading.

At only $20/month more, the 12×50 space often pays for itself in convenience. Every E-Z Storage parking space includes 24/7 access, video surveillance, and use of our on-site rinse station, which is handy for flushing salt water off a hull after a weekend in Galveston Bay.

Store gear separately for a cleaner rig

Many customers pair a parking space with an 8×20 ft container ($85/month) for coolers, life jackets, tools, and seasonal gear. It keeps the boat lighter on the trailer and keeps valuables out of sight.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 24 ft boat fit in a 25 ft parking space?

Usually not. A 24 ft hull on a trailer typically measures 28–30 ft including the tongue and motor. Choose a 12×50 ft space for boats with hulls over about 18–20 ft.

What size storage space does a travel trailer need?

Most travel trailers need a 12×50 ft space. E-Z Storage accommodates RVs and trailers up to 35 ft in length.

Do I need to measure the boat or the trailer for storage?

Measure the whole rig: from the front of the trailer coupler to the rearmost point of the boat or motor. The hull length alone underestimates the space you need.

Climate-Controlled vs. Insulated Storage in Humid Texas: Which Do You Need?

Texas summers push container interiors well past 100°F with near-constant humidity. Here is what insulation alone handles, when you need true climate control, and how to choose.

Interior of a clean climate-controlled storage container holding boxes, a wrapped antique dresser, a framed painting, and a leather armchair on pallets

The short answer: choose a climate-controlled unit if you're storing anything that can warp, mold, crack, or corrode: wood furniture, leather, artwork, photos, documents, instruments, or electronics. Choose an insulated unit for everyday household goods, tools, and seasonal items that just need protection from extreme heat.

Why the Gulf Coast is hard on stored belongings

In Galveston County, summer afternoons regularly top 95°F with humidity that rarely lets up. Inside an uninsulated steel box, temperatures can climb far higher. But heat is only half the problem. When humid air cools overnight, moisture condenses on surfaces, and that cycle of damp and dry is what warps wood, lifts veneers, grows mildew on fabric, and corrodes circuit boards.

Insulated vs. climate-controlled: the difference

Best forFurniture you're not attached to, appliances, tools, holiday décor, sporting goodsAntiques, art, photos, documents, electronics, instruments, leather, mattresses
E-Z Storage price$100/month$195/month

A simple rule of thumb

Ask yourself: "If this item spent a week in a humid garage in August, would it be ruined?" If yes, it belongs in climate control. If it would be fine, an insulated unit protects it at roughly half the cost. If it's tough enough for an unheated shed, a standard 8×20 ft container ($85/month) works.

Packing tips for humid climates

  • Use plastic bins with lids instead of cardboard, which absorbs moisture.
  • Keep furniture on pallets so air circulates underneath.
  • Wrap upholstery in breathable cotton sheets, not plastic, which traps condensation.
  • Make sure everything is completely dry before it goes into storage.

All E-Z Storage containers are built for high structural resistance and guaranteed hurricane-proof, so whatever you choose stays dry. Get a quote or call 713-702-8451.

Frequently asked questions

Is climate-controlled storage worth it in Texas?

For humidity-sensitive items such as wood furniture, electronics, photos, documents, and leather, yes. Gulf Coast humidity causes warping, mold, and corrosion that insulation alone can't prevent.

What is the difference between insulated and climate-controlled storage?

Insulated storage uses insulated walls to slow heat transfer and reduce temperature extremes. Climate-controlled storage actively regulates both temperature and humidity within a set range.

Contractor Storage in Galveston County: Organize Tools, Materials & Work Trucks

Running a crew out of a garage costs time on every job. How Galveston County contractors use a container plus a parking space to stage materials, secure tools, and get rolling faster.

Open double-door storage container with shelving full of power tools and bins, next to a work truck with a ladder rack and an enclosed equipment trailer

The short answer: the most efficient storage setup for a small contracting business is a secure container for tools and materials next to a parking space for your work truck or equipment trailer. Everything lives in one gated, camera-monitored spot that crews can access around the clock.

Why contractors outgrow the home garage

Storing inventory at home works until it doesn't. Materials get rained on, tools walk off from unlocked truck beds, HOA letters arrive about the trailer in the driveway, and every morning starts with 20 minutes of digging for the right bin. Moving operations into a dedicated storage yard solves all of that.

A setup that works

  • Double-door unit ($130/month): doors on both ends let you load lumber from one side and grab tools from the other. No unpacking the whole container to reach the back.
  • Standard 8×20 container ($85/month): for overflow materials, seasonal equipment, or a second crew's gear.
  • Large parking space ($75/month): fits a work truck with a ladder rack, an enclosed trailer, or a skid steer on a flatbed.

Add heavy-duty shelving and labeled bins inside the container and your crew can load out in minutes.

Security that protects your livelihood

Tool theft is one of the biggest preventable costs in the trades. E-Z Storage combines video surveillance with daily visual inspections by staff, and our containers are built tough and guaranteed hurricane-proof, so a Gulf storm won't wipe out your inventory either.

Built around contractor hours

Jobs start early and run late. With 24/7 access, your crew can load at 5 a.m. and drop equipment off after dark without waiting on office hours. Our location at 5420 FM 2004 in Hitchcock puts you minutes from Texas City, La Marque, Santa Fe, and Galveston, with quick access to I-45 for jobs up toward League City and Houston.
